Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop)

Troubleshooting synchronization.

The four most common errors related to getting your Palm version of Teacher's P.E.T. to transfer data to/from Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) are:

1. Teacher's P.E.T. (Palm): Make sure you have the latest available version of Teacher's P.E.T. (Palm) installed and running properly. Only version 3.2 or higher are supported for use with Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop)

2. Palm Desktop Software/HotSync Manager: You need to have the latest version of the Palm Hot sync Manager and desktop software installed. This is a free download from Palm.com (or from the manufacturer of your device - e.g. Sony). If you update your Palm Desktop software you will need to reinstall PET Desktop as well.

3. Install the Conduit: The "Conduit" is a piece of software that talks between the Palm and the desktop software to transfer the data.
Instructions:

Windows: The conduit is installed automatically by the Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) installer. You MUST restart your computer after installation. If you had to reinstall your Palm Desktop software, you will need to reinstall P.E.T. (Desktop) as well to re-register the conduit.

Mac: You may need to copy the file called "TPET Conduit" into your Conduits folder. On Mac OS X, the conduits folder is usually found at Hard Drive: Library: Application Support: Palm HotSync: Conduits. If you can't find it, do a search of your hard drive for the file called "Install Conduit". The "TPET Conduit" file needs to be copied to that same folder. On OS 9, the conduits folder can usually be found in the System Folder (e.g. Macintosh HD: System Folder: Application Support: Palm HotSync: Conduits)

4. "Sync Path": Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) needs to be told where HotSync reads/writes its data from for your Palm. To set this up: Launch Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop). Press "Synchronize". Press the folder icon button next to the "Sync Path" area. On Windows, P.E.T. (Desktop) will try to automatically locate this folder, on a Mac, you must locate it yourself.

The Sync Path is usually found at: (*Username* signifies the HotSync ID of your Palm device)
Mac OS 9/X --> Documents: Palm: Users: *Username*:
Windows --> C:\Program Files\Palm\*Username*\

To see a video demonstration of this,  Click Here
Once you select the folder, P.E.T. will notify you is it is a valid folder. Note: If you have multiple Palm devices, or have ever "named" you Palm, you may have multiple *Username* folders that seem valid. You may need to try them each until you locate the current user. The latest version of P.E.T. (Desktop) also has a search function to try and find the Sync Path" (click the Help icon on the synchronization form of PET Desktop to search).

If correctly following each of these steps does not resolve the synchronization issue:

Email us (support@coffeepotsoftware.com) including the following details:

Palm Device (model, manufacturer)
Desktop Operating System (and version)
Palm Desktop Software version
Do other applications (e.g. Memo Pad, Date book) synchronize properly (please test)
Teacher's P.E.T. (Palm) version
Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) version
Text of any error messages/warning that appear on screen
A backup set of your data from Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) - choose File: Backup and email us the text files it creates

Other issues to consider:
-PET must be installed in the main memory on the Palm
-PET Desktop only works with the Palm version 3.2 or higher
-make sure the sync path is the correct one for YOUR handheld

Installation/Setup/Use

My registration code doesn't work or is lost. What do I do?

Registration codes are based upon your HotSync Name (sometime called your Palm ID or HotSync ID). If you submitted an incorrect HotSync name when you purchased TPET, then the numeric code will not work for you. Email us your proper name (ID), the date you purchased, the version you are using, as well as the purchase reference number your received in your confirmation email from the site you purchased from and we will correct the problem for you. Note: Registration codes can not be reissued without this information (date and site you purchased from are the most important and can usually be found on your credit card statement). Please take an extra second to ensure that your HotSync ID is entered correctly (case sensitive!) . Entering an incorrect HotSync ID may cause the software you download to function incorrectly or not at all. If you do not know your HotSync ID, simply tap the HotSync icon in your applications launcher and look for the name in the upper corner. This name is your HotSync ID. Once your original purchase is located, we will reissue your registration code. Note: Without complete details of date, location of purchase, and reference number it may take several days for a code to be reissued.

Note: If you don't have any of this information, you should contact the reseller who processed your sale (e.g. PalmGear.com or Handago.com). If you purchased through www.coffeepotsoftware.com then your purchase was processed by Handango and they should have a record of your transaction.

Note: Registration codes for Teacher's P.E.T. (Desktop) are different from those for Teacher's P.E.T. (Palm). Teacher's P.E.T. Desktop is sold separately and you must purchase a valid license to receive support.

Installation helps.

There is a step by step installation tutorial available online here: http://www.pdamd.com/vertical/tutorials/guides/installsoftware.xml.

To decompress files, you need software that can read .zip or "Stuff it" (Mac) archives.

Here are a few free sites that offer this software:

How are the grades calculated?

A detailed breakdown of how grades are calculated in Teacher's P.E.T. is provided in the Teacher's P.E.T. manual (html version can be viewed here).

Does Teacher's P.E.T. support foreign languages?

The present version of Teacher's P.E.T has some minor compatibility issues with foreign language "hacks" on the PalmOS (Hebrew+ is one example of this). We are currently working to resolve the issue. Please contact us if you are experiencing this issue.

Is Teacher's P.E.T. compatible with my handheld?

Teacher’s P.E.T. v3.2 is compatible with *almost* all Palm OS handheld devices. There are no known outstanding issues with Palm OS devices running OS 3.1 or higher.

Move from PET from an old device to a new one.

You will need to get v3.2 to be compatible with the latest (Palm OS 5 +) devices.

Download it from coffeepotsoftware.com
Extract the files.
View the included documentation to find the right version for your device.
Install it and register it on your new device.

(Note: Registration codes are based on the devices "HotSync ID" (name). To avoid having to buy another registration, make sure your new device has the same name as your old one - contact Palm for support with this. If your registration code doesn't work, or is lost, please see our web site FAQ’s for instructions)

Once it is running, on your old device, select Settings, Backup (from menu).
Select "Data"
Beam the PET_Backup.prc file that it creates from your old Palm to your new one.

Run the PET_Backup.prc file on your new device by taping the icon.

If prompted, choose replace.

Your data should now be carried forward to the new device.

Does Teacher’s PET support the PocketPC?

At present, a version of Teacher's P.E.T. for PocketPC 2002 devices is not yet available. We hope to be able to support these devices in the future, but no release date has been set.
